TRANSNATIONAL COOPERATION PROGRAMME MED

The Transnational Cooperation Programme MED aims at making the whole Med space a territory able to meet international concurrence in order to ensure growth and employment for the next generations as well as at supporting territorial cohesion and actively intervening in favour of environmental protection within the framework of sustainable development. The Programme will cover the period 2007-2013.

Cyprus participates in the MED Programme together with Greece, Malta, Slovenia, Gibraltar and eligible areas of France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. In addition, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina participate using funds from the instrument for Pre-accession Assistance.

The total budget of the MED Programme amounts to 256,6 million euro out of which 193,2 million euro is Community contribution from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The co-financing rate from ERDF for Cyprus is 85%.

The bodies eligible for funding (beneficiaries) under the Programme MED are public authorities, local and regional authorities, bodies governed by public law and economic operators under certain conditions.

Four priority axes have been identified for the MED Programme: (1) Strengthening innovation capacities, (2) Protection of the environment and promotion of a sustainable territorial development, (3) Improvement of mobility and territorial accessibility and (4) Promotion of a polycentric and integrated development of the Med space.

The Region Provence-Alpes-Côte d´Azur in France has been appointed as the Managing Authority of the Programme, which is assisted by a Joint Technical Secretariat based in Marseille. Two Liaison Offices support the management of the Programme situated in Valencia and Thessaloniki.
